Shout! Factory reached out to commission artwork for the 30th-anniversary release of Explorers. For someone who has spent much of his career working in film and television—and who genuinely loves movie art—this was a dream project from the beginning.
The assignment gave me the opportunity to create artwork for a film I have always loved while approaching it from the perspective of both a designer and someone who has spent years working inside the film industry. I wanted the artwork to feel connected to the spirit of the original film while still giving the anniversary release its own visual identity.
Projects like this are particularly meaningful to me because they bring together several parts of my background at once: graphic design, art direction, film history, visual storytelling, and a lifelong interest in movie posters and alternate artwork.
The project became even more memorable when Ethan Hawke personally reached out to compliment the artwork. Having someone who was part of the original film connect with the finished piece years later was an incredibly rewarding moment and one of those experiences that stays with you.
